James 2:14-17 (KJV): What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?15 If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, 16 And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit? 17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.
We should wear our faith in Christ on our chests for the world to see, and not be ashamed that we love Jesus. With faith we must do good works accordingly. Using this scripture as an example, one might have faith and pray for poor people, but that faith and prayer also need action. Are you doing anything to help the needy?
This could be applied to other aspects of life as well.
For example, if you are overweight and out of shape, certainly pray to God for guidance and have faith, but you must also take action, such as making healthier choices and tracking caloric intake. It wouldn't do anyone much good to eat fast food cheeseburgers 3 times a day, and have faith alone that you'll lose weight! As the scripture states, good faith without good works is useless.
The same can be said of other actions and life choices that we may not be proud of. Perhaps you suffer from substance or physical addiction of some sort, or have an adulterous spirit. You must pray to God and ask Jesus for forgiveness and to show you the error in your ways and how to repent, and turn to the Word for guidance (remember, there is an answer for everything in the Bible and passages to go along with it, but you must do your part and read it and research where that is located. Most all Bibles have a search index for common problems, or you can search online for faster results to the exact Gospels for specific issues). Through that, you must take action as well. Those righteous actions will come to mind as you pray and read through the Word, to begin the process of stopping and/or changing whatever it is you are doing that needs cleaned up.
We have no reason to be ashamed of the fact that we have decided to follow Jesus. As Christians, we have realized that there is no other way than the way of Christ. There is no other name more powerful than the name of Jesus.
The gospel of Christ comes full power because it testifies to the victory of Jesus Christ that He won for all mankind.
